To read multiple works by the same author
To build reading stamina
To build student background knowledge
How will this be implemented in 5th grade?
In order to encourage students to read from a variety of genres and meet the standards, each student will have a Reading & Vocabulary Journal section his/her binder. In this section, students will keep track of the books they read and complete the following skill building activities:
Functional & Media Literacy: Cite Resources
Record the title, author, genre, date started/finished, total pages in book, & level of difficulty (E, JR, or C)/Lexile level
To find Lexile level, visit http://lexile.com/ and search for your book
Reading for Literacy Comprehension: Synthesize Important Story Elements
In your own words, write a ¾ page summary
For fiction books, the summary should include the setting, characters, theme, and plot (conflict, plot events, & resolution)
Guiding Questions: How do the characters in the story respond to challenges? What details helped you determine the theme?
For informational books, the summary should include the topic, main idea, and important supporting ideas
Guiding questions: How do the key details support the main idea? How does the author use reasons and evidence to support particular points in the text?
For poetry, discuss how the poems made you feel as you were reading, give examples of figurative language (simile, metaphors, personification, etc.) and interpret the meaning, and discuss other poetic devices (rhyme, rhythm, repetition, etc.)
Guiding questions: How do the poems make me feel? How are the poems alike and different? What is the theme of each poem?
